Summer time Tips for CareGivers!
Summer time is here and as such, we wanted to share some important tips for our caregivers:
- Hydration, hydration, hydration. People with Alzheimer's disease or other dementias can be prone to dehydration so be sure to offer small glasses of water or a favorite beverage throughout the day.
- Limit exposure to the sun and excessive heat. Never leave a loved one with dementia in a car while running errands. Bring along sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat for outdoor activities.
- Consider family picnics and get-togethers as a fun time for all but be mindful of the need for your loved one to have a place to get away or nap during these events to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the noise or physical activity.
- Never leave a person with dementia in charge of children or children in charge of someone with dementia. Summer cook-outs and water play at the pool can be hazardous for children and people with dementia.
- Make use of the coolness of the morning or evening to bring your loved one outdoors for fresh air and walks.
