Is bath time particularly stressful?

Bath time can be a particular stressful time.  Depending on their overall health condition it can be a very challenging.  Here are some suggestions on how to make this experience a little less stressful.

  • Set a regular bathing time. Routines can be less stressful.
  • Gather all supplies in advance.
  • Be sure to check the temperature to ensure it is not too hot or too cold.  Fill to only a few inches.
  • If your loved one is anxious about getting into the tub, consider filling the water after they are seated.

  • Music may alleviate anxiety.  Singing together while bathing may make the process fun.
  • A bath chair may make getting in and out of the bath easier and safer for both you and your loved one.
  • Use a hand-held shower head set on low spray.
  • Use a soap that can be used both as a body gel and shampoo; be sure to get a soap that is gentle on the eyes.  Use a bath mitten with a pouch for the soap, or make your own by sewing a pocket in a washcloth.
  • Always consider your loved one’s privacy and dignity.  Wrap them in a large towel, such as a beach towel or bath blanket.
  • Cover or remove mirrors.  This may help preserve your loved one’s sense of privacy if they fear the reflection in the mirror is another person or draws additional attention to being undress and their body.
