Aggression and Anxiety

Do certain situations cause your loved one to become aggressive or anxious?  Identifying the cause may help you identify a way to address the behavior.  Consider the following possible causes:

  • Physical discomfort caused by illness or medication
  • Overstimulation, for example, loud noises or busy environment
  • Unfamiliar surroundings, including not recognizing a known place
  • Complicated tasks, including difficulty with tasks previously performed
  • Frustrating interactions, including inability to understand or communicate effectively

What may help:

  • Relaxation techniques may help relieve aggression and anxiety. Try music, massage, speak in soft tones.
  • Changing the focus of attention may also help. Consider creating a memory box or board with pictures of treasured people and places.
