 There are two kinds of
Adult Day Service Programs:

Social Model - Some centers are best for those who only need supervision and socialization with their peers.  Activities include music, art, exercise, field trips and nutrition. Professional staff ensures the safety and well being of participants. The goal is to maximize abilities and provide quality care as well as respite for the caregiver.

Health Model - When faced with serious mental or physical impairments such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, dementia, chronic heart disease or fragility, a health model might be best. In a “health model” center, a variety of health and therapeutic services are provided.  Nursing staff works closely with physicians to ensure that the best care plan is followed at the center.  The center’s goal is to stabilize the participant’s physical and mental conditions and maximize independence.

Both kinds of centers operate Monday through Friday from early morning to late afternoon.  All Centers are licensed and those in the Coalition have a long history of service in the community. Costs vary among adult day centers. Costs range from $25 a day to over $100 per day depending on the services offered and type of reimbursment.  Some financial assistance may be available through federal or state programs. (e.g., MediCal, Older Americans Act, Veterans Administration and some insurances.)Transportation is provided in all health models and in some social models.

Making a choice for a center to help you in your caring is a big step that will likely require you to call and visit centers to see what center fits best.  Visitors are always welcome.
